Meet Terry: Upskilling Pharmaceutical Leadership and Driving Commercial Success

Updated: Jun 11

The Tillon Team is growing and with it so is our sector specific expertise...

Meet the latest addition to the Tillon team: Terry O'Regan. Terry’s career has been defined by changing lives - from helping to pioneer early Alzheimer’s interventions to achieving regulatory approval for the first rare disease therapy to receive full recommendation from both NICE and NHS England in over a decade. He has not only increased patient access to these life-changing drugs, but has consistently driven and created sustainable commercial value through his corporate leadership, and his expertise in product development, market access, and strategic growth

High Performance In and Out of the Boardroom

Terry brings an impressive track record of boardroom achievements, including:

  • Leading Biogen’s UK&I affiliate to become the top-performing affiliate across multiple metrics.

  • Overseeing ~$7bn in sales (50% of Biogen’s total revenue) at Biogen USA , successfully reversing the decline in the MS franchise and returning it to growth through innovative strategy, structural optimisation, and cultural renewal.

  • 2 x President positions in Biotech Startups: Brains Bioceutical and more recently with NeuroQuest.

His drive for high performance also extends beyond the boardroom: Terry is an age-group triathlete who has represented Great Britain at both the World and European Championships. He will be competing again at the World Championships in Spain in September 2026.

Changing Lanes

Just as Terry is adept at shifting sporting disciplines, swapping his wetsuit for cycling shoes, he has reached a point in his career where it is time to shift his professional focus.

“I have reached a point in my career where I want to dedicate my time, experience, and energy to what I am most passionate about: helping good leaders become exceptional leaders with a particular focus on Pharma and Biotechnology in the Life Sciences Sector...I am convinced that when all other factors are broadly equal; strong science, innovative products, robust strategies, sufficient capital, and highly capable professionals and subject matter experts, the single greatest differentiator and sustainable competitive advantage is the quality of the leader and the leadership team.”

Terry is joining forces with the team at Tillon to help expand our offering to the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector. He will be coming alongside pharmaceutical leaders as a trusted and experienced advisor, working with them at an individual level, a team level, and an operational level to help drive reliable execution and improve performance.

“The organisations that consistently outperform are not necessarily those with the largest budgets, the most extensive pipelines, or the greatest resources. They are the organisations that achieve exceptional alignment between strategy and execution. They ensure that every function understands its role in delivering success and that decisions are made with the patient, the customer, and the long-term value of the asset in mind.”

Navigating Complexity

Terry recognises that the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are facing a period of unprecedented complexity. Research and development costs continue to rise, development timelines are lengthening, regulatory expectations are increasing, and the probability of successfully bringing a new therapy to market remains highly uncertain. Against this backdrop, every strategic decision carries greater consequence than ever before.

Driven by evidence showing that the first six months following the launch of a breakthrough asset are critical in determining its long-term success, Terry helps pharmaceutical leaders navigate the commercial complexities of this crucial launch period to maximise their chances of success.

This challenge becomes equally significant when innovation pipelines slow and R&D productivity declines. In these circumstances, organisations must find ways to maximise the value of their existing and maturing portfolios. This requires a different but equally demanding set of capabilities: optimising market access, expanding indications, identifying new patient populations, strengthening customer engagement, improving operational efficiency, and extracting maximum value from established brands while continuing to serve patient needs.

Whether the challenge is launching a transformational new therapy or maximising the performance of a mature portfolio, the underlying success factors remain remarkably consistent. Terry believes success ultimately depends on the quality of leadership.

In both high-growth and resource-constrained environments, leadership becomes the ultimate multiplier. Strong leadership creates trust. Trust enables collaboration. Collaboration drives alignment. Alignment accelerates execution. And execution is what ultimately determines whether scientific innovation becomes commercial success.
In my experience, breakthrough science creates opportunity, but leadership determines whether that opportunity is fully realised. The difference between an asset that transforms a company and one that falls short of its potential is often not the quality of the science—it is the quality of the leadership, the strategy, and the organisation's ability to execute as one team.”

Connect with Terry

On Wednesday, 17th June at 12:30, Terry will be joining Tillon MD Toby Bassford for our monthly lunchtime webinar for executive leaders. Together, they will be discussing culture.

Reflecting on his own career, Terry attributes much of his success to the power of intentional culture building:

‘While technology, products, and business models can be copied, exceptional leadership and a strong culture are far more difficult to replicate. The best leaders create environments where people are aligned around a clear purpose, empowered to perform, encouraged to innovate, and inspired to achieve outcomes that exceed expectations.’
